Empire State Building

Some people have a fear of heights. I do also, to a certain degree.

For example, I’d never walk out over one of those transparent floors. I think the Tower Bridge in London now has a clear, see – through floor on the top section.

I’ve been to the top of a lot of important buildings and monuments though. I did go to the top section of the Tower Bridge in London before they installed the transparent floor.

I’ve been to the top of the Space Needle in Seattle three times now and I’ll go again upon my next visit to the Emerald City. I’d like to visit their Comic Con event one year.

I’ve been to New York a lot and I’ve made it to the top of the Empire State Building twice now. It’s a great view of the city.

I may not go up there again, just because the line and the wait is so long.

On one of my trips to the top of the Empire State Building, it was right after 9-11 and they had lots of security up there.

I’ve been to the top of the Willis Tower in Chicago. It used to be called the Sears Tower. I had drinks with my friend and some relatives. I remember we all stood and leaned forward to plant our foreheads against the glass, like they did in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. That is very scary to do.

The Willis Tower has a section of glass that you can stand on and look straight down. I’d never do that.

I also went to the top of the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio, Texas. I didn’t eat at the restaurant, but I plan to on my next visit. It’s a great view of the Alamo City from up there.

Another cool place I’ve been is the top of the St. Louis Arch. The little cars that you ride to the top were cramped and the area up there is not too large, but it was a great experience that I’d do again if I ever get back to St. Louis.

I’m probably most proud to say that I’ve been to the top of the Eiffel Tower. I know that many will never make the trip to Paris and of those that go, most will not wait in the lines to get to the top of the tower.

I videotaped my ride up and also of the view from up there. I can watch the video any time I want and relive my day up there.

There are still several buildings and monuments I plan on going to the top of before my travels are through.

I suggest you make out a ‘Bucket List’ and try your best to mark things off as you accomplish them. I add to my ‘Bucket List’ all of the time.

One of my next goals is to go to the top of the Freedom Tower in New York. It’s the building that replaced the World Trade Center. I bet the view from up there is spectacular.

Keep on climbing. You don’t get to see the great view from the ground floor.

I’ve been to the top of the Empire State Building a couple of times now and it never gets old. The only downside is waiting in the long lines to take the elevators to the top. Along the way, they take your picture in front of a photo of the building and sell it to you on your way down. I always got the picture.

The Empire State Building has 103 floors and is 1250 feet tall. With the antennae spire it’s 1454 feet tall. There were about 3400 workers involved in the construction of the building and 5 workers died during the project. It took only 410 days to complete and was officially opened on May 1st, 1931 when President Herbert Hoover turned the lights on by pushing a button from Washington, D.C.

For 41 years, from 1931 to 1972, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. It has 6,514 windows and from street level to the 103rd floor there are 1872 steps. It has 73 elevators, including 6 freight elevators. Because so many businesses call the Empire State Building home, it has its’ own zip code.

The building cost $24,718,000 and when you add in the cost of the land the total balloons to $40,948,900. There’s a lightening rod on the top that is struck by lightening about 23 times a year. About 4 million people visit the building each year and it’s the most photographed building in the world. On a clear day you can see 5 states from the top of the Empire State Building: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The observation deck on the 102nd floor was planned as a check in for airships docked at the tower.

On one of my visits, it was shortly after 9-11. You can tell because there were armed guards all over the top of the building.
