The World Trade Center was known worldwide but the event of 9-11 etched its’ image in everyone’s mind the globe over. There were 110 stories in each tower, with 10,000,000 square feet of rentable space in the Twin Towers. There was 1 acre of rentable space on each floor. 50,000 people worked in the towers and 200,000 visitors daily. 150,000 people used the subway station daily.
200,000 tons of steel and 425,000 cubic yards of concrete were used in the construction of the towers. There were 43,600 windows, 239 elevators and 71 escalators in the buildings, along with 2,000 parking spaces in the 5 underground parking levels.
3,500 people worked on the construction site during peak construction and 60 people died during the project. The Twin Towers weighed 1,500,000 tons and 250,000 gallons of paint were used each year to spruce up the towers. 30,000 cups of coffee were served daily as well as 87 tons of food delivered each day. There were 19 murders committed and 17 babies born at the Twin Towers.
3 men parachuted off the top, 12 mountain climbers scaled the outside of the buildings and 1 tightrope walker walked a rope between the two buildings. There were 3,800 gold bars weighing 12 tons and worth $100 million dollars stored in the basement vault of the buildings.
Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters. 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States.
Two jets hit each of the Twin Towers while another jet hit the Pentagon and a fourth jet crashed in Pennsylvania. It’s believed that the passengers disrupted the hi-jackers plans thus causing the jet to be crashed in a field before it could reach its’ desired target. All on board are considered American Heroes, as well as all who lost their lives and all of the first responders like the firemen and policemen.
The attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11 resulted in the largest loss of life by a foreign attack on American soil. The clean up of the wreckage of Ground Zero took 9 months.
Each year, on September 11th, we as a nation remember 9 – 11 and the victims and heroes.
